PRESS RELEASE – The National University of Samoa and EQAP Collaborate on Micro-Credential Framework Workshop on a Regional Scale

The National University of Samoa (NUS), in partnership with the Educational Quality and Assessment Programme (EQAP) of the Pacific Community (SPC), conducts a significant three-day Micro-Credential Framework Workshop. The sessions are held from August 6th to 8th, 2024 at the Lava Hotel Conference Room and will engage NUS staff, PSET Providers and key stakeholders from various sectors.
The Oloamanu Centre for Professional Development and Continuing Education (OCPDCE) coordinated this initiative to equip participants with the essential knowledge and skills required to develop, implement, and recognize micro-credentials within the rapidly evolving educational landscape.
NUS recognizes the increasing need for flexible and stackable qualifications that validate specific competencies valued by employers. As such, this workshop has been designed to address the diverse needs of participants, including educators, trainers, employers, and other key stakeholders. Together, they will explore the growing trend of micro-credentials that aim to address the pressing skills gaps present in today’s workforce.
The primary objectives of the workshop focus on understanding the regional framework for micro-qualifications, developing key features of micro-qualifications in selected fields, and recognizing their significance within the context of national and international goals. “We are excited to host this workshop, which not only represents a vital step forward in educational development but also aligns with our commitment to providing high-quality, relevant education in Samoa,” stated NUS Vice Chancellor Professor Tuifuisa’a Patila Amosa. “Together with EQAP, we aim to forge meaningful artnerships that will enable us to address the evolving needs of our workforce through innovative credentialing frameworks.”
The workshop aligns with the priorities outlined in the NUS Corporate Plan and directly contributes to the Education Sector Plan 2019-2024, which underlines the importance of granting access to high-quality education that meets national needs. “Our goal is to create opportunities for employees to reskill and upskill, ensuring they remain competitive in a rapidly changing job market,” added Professor Tuifuisa’a.
Ultimately, the workshop represents a strategic investment in the future of education in Samoa, enhancing opportunities for professional development while deepening participants’ knowledge of micro-credentials It also facilitates collaboration aimed at promoting collective growth in skill acquisition.
Professor Amosa concluded, “With the support from EQAP, we look forward to innovative exchanges that will shape the future of education in Samoa.”
